A typical coral polyp is a small organism of about 10mm long and 1-3 mm in diameter. Few solitary polyps also reach to a diameter of 25 cm. Basal disc is absent in these coral polyps as the basal region is surrounded by calcareous exoskeleton. The oral disc bears numerous tentacles in several rows around the oval or circular mouth. Pharynx is short with no siphonoglyphs. Mesenteries are restricted only to the upper part of the polyp. The mesenterial filaments have glandular lobe bearing nematocysts. Muscles are not well developed. Living polyps are found only on the surface layers of the coral mass. Feeding type is both raptorial and suspension at night. When not feeding, they withdraw into cup-like cavities of skeleton. Most corals are symbiotic with zooxanthellae. A coral polyp is the basic unit of a coral reef. It is a tiny, soft-bodied animal that secretes a hard calcium carbonate skeleton. Coral polyps are found in colonies of thousands or even millions of individuals. Coral polypThe body of a coral polyp is sac-like and has two main parts: the oral cavity and the gastrovascular cavity. The oral cavity is located at the top of the polyp and is surrounded by a ring of tentacles. The tentacles are used to capture food particles from the water. The gastrovascular cavity is located at the bottom of the polyp and contains the polyp's digestive organs. The coral polyp's skeleton is secreted by cells called epithecae. The skeleton is made up of calcium carbonate and is what gives coral reefs their hard, rocky structure. The skeleton of a coral polyp is also home to a symbiotic alga called zooxanthellae. Zooxanthellae are photosynthetic organisms that produce food for the coral polyp. Coral polyps reproduce both sexually and asexually. Sexually, coral polyps release sperm and eggs into the water, where they fertilize and develop into larvae. Asexually, coral polyps can reproduce by budding or fission. Budding is when a new polyp grows from the side of an existing polyp. Fission is when an existing polyp splits into two separate polyps. Coral polyps are an essential part of coral reefs. They are the builders of coral reefs and provide food and shelter for a variety of marine life. Coral polyps are also a source of food for humans and are used in the production of jewellery and other decorative items.
