Zooxanthellae are symbiotic algae that live within the tissues of coral polyps. They play several crucial roles within coral reefs:
Photosynthesis: Zooxanthellae are photosynthetic organisms, harnessing sunlight to produce sugars and oxygen through photosynthesis. They provide a significant portion of the coral's energy needs through this process.
Nutrient Cycling: The byproducts of photosynthesis, such as oxygen and simple sugars, are utilized by the coral for respiration and as an energy source. In return, the coral polyps provide the zooxanthellae with a protected environment and nutrients.
Coloration: The pigments within zooxanthellae give corals their vibrant colors. This symbiotic relationship contributes to the stunning and diverse coloration seen in healthy coral reefs.
