After the fusion of sperm and plasma membrane of oocyte the secondary oocyte shows cortical reaction. The cortical granules which are present below the plasma membrane fuse with plasma membrane and release cortical enzymes between the plasma membrane and zona pellucida. These enzyme s harden the zona pellucida to prevent entry of additional sperms. Formation of fertilization membrane prevents polyspermy.
